As part of this week's assignment:
Take a walk outside and find a bird, insect, or flower that you don’t already know about. Take its picture or find one on the Web. Put the picture on your blog and write about the life form you found. Your blog should include (i) scientific and folk names of the object, (ii) an account of how/where you found it, (iii) a detailed description of it, (iv) its natural history and any other interesting information you can dig up.
This item should be posted by 8 p.m. Sunday.
In addition, read Chapter 4 in Field Guide for Science Writers.
Final articles due Tuesday. Topics for the next article will be assigned during our next class.

What's the best way to find the plant online if you don't know the name of the plant? I tried describing the plant in a google search, but that's not working. I only get plants that look very similar, but not what I'm looking for.
ReplyDeleteTiffany, I know there are lots of botany websites, but I don't know the best place to look for a photo to i.d. a plant. You may try e-mailing a low-res image to one of the sites to see if they can i.d. it or go to a botanist on campus. Also, the library surely has plant-identification guides. Get one for the Northeast. If you email a photo, I'll take a look, too.
ReplyDeleteI just realized that your question related to your first nature blog, and you have already i.d'd that plant.
ReplyDeleteYea but thank you anyway. I actually talked to Kent Adams who was a great help.
