In addition to the work assigned in class, please read Chapter 17 in A Field Guide for Science Writers. Just to sum up the rest of your assignment:
1. Read the scientific study that you will be writing about for your next article & write a proposed lede. We will discuss these ledes in our next class.
2. "Lede of the Week." Post the lede in this week's Science Times that you like best, with a short explanation of why you like it.
3. Nature blog II. Repeat last week's assignment. Consider your blog a miniature story, with a lede that draws people in. Include a detailed description, natural history, fun facts. Explain the meanings of the scientific and common names. Due 6 p.m. Sunday.
4. Read each other's nature blogs and send me an e-mail with your nominations for the top 3 (not including your own). Due 6 p.m. Monday. We'll discuss the results on Tuesday.

I wasn't in class, could you fill me in on what my next story needs to be?
ReplyDeleteAre all the studies on Eurekalert!?
ReplyDeleteWhat in god's name is a Eurekalert?? Sounds like a game show hosted by Mark Summers.
ReplyDeleteTiffany, all the story ideas I suggested in class are from Eureka Alert, except for the first two, which are from the Evolution and Human Behavior journal website. Those studies looked at the correlation between women's looks and pregnancy and at the evolutionary benefit to men of having big muscles.
ReplyDeleteShaun, if you wondering what Eureka Alert is, see my science links.
ReplyDeletebtw, "eureka" is ancient Greek for "I found it."
The Evolution and Human Behavior journal requires you to be a member and requires you to pay for the articles.
ReplyDeleteI am having trouble finding the study I chose. Are they all recent or from the last few years? I have looked up birds responding to global warming and get press releases about global warming but they aren't about birds specifically. Help!?
ReplyDeleteTiffany, did you speak to the library or contact the journal? The library should be able to help you obtain it. If not, if you email the journal and explain that you are a student who wishes to write about the study, they probably will send you a copy, an electronic version.
ReplyDeleteI'm having trouble trying to find the article. What was the specific time frame of it?
