E-mail and hard copies of papers
I forgot to ask you to e-mail copies of your last paper. Bring a hard copy to class as well.
As I mentioned on Tuesday, please read an article or two from Science Times before finishing your paper. Try to model your paper after the Times articles.

Final papers due
Your fourth and final paper will be due on Tuesday. It should be about a thousand words.
Also, read the final two chapters and the afterword in Field Notes from a Catastrophe. For your blog, write about your reading and your impressions of the book as a whole.
E-mail me two topics for discussion in class, one pertaining to the book, the other about anything relating to science writing or the course.
I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.

Assignment
Read chapters 7-8 in Field Notes from a Catastrophe and post your reactions on your blog. Also, e-mail me a topic for class discussion.
Also read the two posts on the coyote study that I linked to in my earlier post and be prepared to discuss them in class.
Continue working on your fourth paper. I'd like you to hand in the first several grafs along with an explanation of where the rest of the story is heading and a list of sources.
See you next Tuesday!

Next assignment
We will have class next week. Given the holiday break, it may be a short one.
Your assignment is as follows:
1. Read chapters 5-6 in Field Notes from a Catastrophe and be prepared to talk about them in class.
2. Post a blog analyzing the chapters. What did you learn from them? Any criticisms? How did you like the writing--in terms of style and content? As usual, deadline is 8 p.m. Sunday.
3. E-mail me a progress report for your fourth paper. I want evidence that you are working on and thinking about the paper.

Kolbert article in New Yorker
Elizabeth Kolbert, the author of Field Notes from a Catastrophe, has a piece in the latest New Yorker about Super-Freakonomics, a book that attempts to pooh-pooh the scare over global warming. You can read her book review here.
